New tech Developed to protect police from being ambushed

In order to put a stop to the ambush of police officers, a new technology has been developed to help protect the police from being ambushed when pulled over.

The FCA have presented a technology dubbed the Officer Protection Package, it will enhance safety for police officers working in parked vehicles. The tech works by detecting movement behind police vehicles using cameras and radar and warns the police driver. The plan and public announcement of this tech is to implement the module in all 2017 Dodge Charger Pursuit law enforcement vehicles, which are popularly known as the best-selling high-performance police vehicles in the U.S.

According to a press release by Jeff Kommor, the Vice President of U.S. Sales Operations, Fleet, and Small Business Sales, “This technology is designed to prevent an officer from being ambushed from the rear while parked. While it does not replace vigilance, this technology acts as a second set of eyes and provides police officers with added peace of mind when they are in a parked Charger Pursuit.”

The package alert the police officers when someone approaches behind their vehicle. The tech does this  by using  the Charger Pursuit’s existing rear park assist system and rear backup camera. It is also simple to install, attach the module which is secured under the dash and plug into the OBDII port. To activate it, officers press the Aux 1 button.

Note; Activating the Officer Protection Package also turns on the reverse sensors, which sound a chime when tripped. Upon alert, the officer can see what’s behind the vehicle via the camera display. The doors also lock, the front windows roll up, and the taillights flash.

The Officer Protection Package is the product from a collaboration between FCA US and InterMotive Inc. of California.
