A Finnish tech firm by name HMD Global which has a sole manufacturing and selling license for Nokia -branded smartphones, has made an announcement to partner with ZEISS, a popular camera optics firm.

The partnership between the two companies is centered on setting a new imaging standards within the smartphone industry and it is said to be an indicator to the advent of ZEISS lenses in upcoming Nokia smartphones.

Although it has not been confirmed but the upcoming Nokia 9 - rumoured to have dual rear cameras - may be the first Nokia phone to use Carl Zeiss optics.

According to a statement credited to HMD Global, "with a joint ambition to advance the quality of the total imaging experience on smartphones spanning the entire ecosystem from software, services, through to screen quality, and optic design, the partnership will see ZEISS and HMD Global co-develop standard-defining imaging capabilities and will bring the ZEISS brand back to Nokia smartphones."

A background check on the two companies reveals that Nokia and ZEISS started partnering with each other as long as 2005 when the former launched its Nokia N90. It was the company's first popular handset with Carl Zeiss optics.

The partnership's effect was later seen in other popular smartphones as well like the Lumia 920 and Lumia 1520 . Other Nokia N Series smartphones along with those, which came with the PureView imaging sensors, also used ZEISS optics technology.

"Collaborating with ZEISS is an important part of our commitment to always deliver the very best experience for our customers. Our fans want more than a great smartphone camera, they want a complete imaging experience that doesn't just set the standard but redefines it.
Our fans expect it and, together with ZEISS, we're delivering it - co-developed imaging excellence for all," said Arto Nummela, CEO, HMD Global.

It is also worthy to note that Nokia, back in March this year, confirmed on Twitter that it is not using Carl ZEISS imaging technology or lenses in its Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3 smartphones. However, things are looking different now as with the offer of better image quality, there could be a price rise in the upcoming Nokia smartphones.

The last Nokia-branded smartphone to come with PureView and ZEISS optics technology was the Lumia 950 and the Lumia 950 XL.
