1. Protect your hearing in noisy events and activities

There are activities or events you will be in, it will be very difficult to hear a single statement that makes sense, examples are Sport events, noisy entertainment Shows, night clubs and and so on.

If you find your self in any of the listed environment, you can protect your hearing by wearing earplugs. It is advisable to wear re-usable musicians' earplugs that reduce the volume of music but don't muffle it.

If the means of getting the earplugs are not available, you can play safe by taking a break from the noise every 15 minutes and give your hearing about 18 hours to recover afterwards.

2. Avoid loud noise

Hearing loss as a result of loud noise can be avoided only by keeping away from loud noise. There are no yard sticks to qualify noisy environments but noise levels are measured in decibels (dB). The higher the values in decibels, the louder the noise level.

Your environment is noisy if you have to raise your voice to talk to your neighbour, if you have ringing in your ears afterwards, if your ears hurts, and if you can't hear what people nearby are saying.

3. Always ensure that your hearing is tested

It is health wise to go for a hearing test and tackle any problem related to hearing as soon as it is detected.

The hearing checks should be done at least once a year if your job has to be done in a noisy area, and once every two years if otherwise.

4. Take precautions when listening to music

Hearing loss is now on the increase due to the emergence of earphones and headphones. Listening to loud music through your headphones and earphones is very catastrophic to hearing and if you must use any of those accessories, then use a noise-cancelling earphone or headphone and don't just turn the volume up to cover up outside noise.

To be on the safer side, listen to the music below 60 percent of the maximum volume, don't use earphones or headphones for more than an hour at a time and also, take a break for at least five minutes every hour.
